LOGANSPORT MAN CONVICTED OF RECKLESS HOMICIDE

02/18/2022

PRESS RELEASE
Jaspreet Singh
LOGANSPORT – Noah Schafer, the Cass County Prosecuting Attorney, announced that Jaspreet Singh, of Sacramento, CA, was convicted this week of reckless homicide following a trial by jury.  The charge arose out of a crash at the intersection of State Roads 24 and 35 in Cass County, frequently called the Anoka Exchange.  The crash, which occurred in May of 2021, claimed the life of a Cass County resident.

In a trial where facts were largely uncontested, jurors heard evidence that after missing the exit turning onto 24 from 35, Singh brought his 18-wheel tractor trailer to a full stop in the left lane of the highway and began to back up to make the turn.  Prosecutors Noah Schafer and Joe Thieke presented eyewitnesses and crash reconstructionists to the jury to describe how this led to the victim fatally striking the semi trailer.  The defense argued that Singh’s act, while negligent, failed to meet the requirements for criminal liability.   The jury deliberated for just over two hours before returning a conviction.

Schafer said of the case, "We’re grateful for the combined efforts of the Cass County Sheriff’s Department, the Logansport Police Department, and the Indiana State Police for their work in handling this case.  Though nothing will restore the life lost, we hope that a measure of justice will help the family of the victim.”
